Again, I had bought this machine as a secondhand
unit which was considered surplus -- had done
very few miles of use. The reason I had bought it
was because my previous MD portable - the MZ-E20
(E40)'s control panel had died on me and caused
the unit to break down. This one offered plenty
of improvemeot over the older unit.
The remote control allows me to hide the unit in
a coat pocket or bum-bag but have the remote
control within easy reach. I then clip the remote
control to my belt or pocket edge so I have the
MD Walkman under control.
It still offers that "segue-shuffle" feature that
the E20 offered -- works well for those
compilations that I make. To achieve this, I
erase the silences between tracks and even do
what radio stations do when songs fade out - clip
them at the end of a repeated chorus before
fading becomes significant. Then, even if I run
these portables in shuffle-play, I still have
radio-style smooth transitions between songs.
I have a Sony transformer for house use and a
Sony cigar-lighter adaptor for car / boat use,
both of which provides 1.5 volts using
their "unified" plug. These were used with a WM-
GX51 radio / cassette Walkman recorder that I
used to own before it broke down on me. Then I
bought a Sony WM-FX503 radio / cassette Walkman
player which did not have a DC socket for any
external power and they ended up gathering dust.
Once I bought this MD Walkman, I was able to use
the Sony transformer to run it off the mains. The
cigar-lighter adaptor will come in very handy
whenever I want to use this Walkman to listen to
music privately in a car or play MDs through a
car stereo using my cassette adaptor.
Also I can then buy some "gumpack" batteries and
charge them using my Sony "three-up" "gumpack"
charger and save on those batteries. Also it
still lasts a long time with those Duracell
Ultras that I like to use with high-tech gear.
