This is a fairly new unit from Sony & MDLP
compatible. The build quality is fairly
lightweight (compared to the 940), which was a
bit of a disappointment at first, but I use it
with some high quality audio gear (Audiolab
8000LX amp Marantz CD63KI CD player & Monitor
Audio R852md speakers) so it's out of it's league
in terms of sound & build...but hey it was only
£150, so what do you expect?!?
I opted for this MD deck as a compromise (I
wanted a Teac 3-head tape deck), but am more than
happy with the MD sound & don't regret the choice.
The unit fairly easy to use & editing functions
are simple via remote.
Of course, the MDS-JE440 minidisc did not sound
quite as good as my CD player source, but that
cost nearly 3 times as much! However on most
music e.g. Chemical Brothers, Fat Boy Slim, even
Classical the difference was negligable - you
would have to be trying hard to notice.
The killer feature on this unit has to be MDLP,
2x or 4x the time on one MD, in stereo! LP2
sounds pretty good, especially for car use. LP4
sounds more compressed & a bit rough, but it's OK
for FM Radio/speech recordings & you get about
320 minutes on a 80min MD!
I would recommend this unit & am now a MD convert.
PS. If you do a lot of track titles etc the 640 +
keyboard is a good choice.
